Question 1

Can I see sumo in Tokyo outside of the official tournament season?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Official sumo tournaments (basho) in Tokyo take place only in January, May and September, but at Sunamachi Ginza Sumo Stable you can watch real sumo and try it yourself all year round, on almost any day. It is the ideal way to experience sumo in Tokyo when there is no tournament on.

Question 2

Is this a real sumo experience or a staged tourist show?

Accepted Answer

It is completely authentic. This is a genuine sumo experience in a real, local Tokyo neighborhood — not a staged tourist attraction and not a dance performance. The sumo is real, performed by former wrestlers and trained athletes, and you experience it up close.

Question 3

What makes the ring (dohyo) authentic?

Accepted Answer

Our dohyo is hand-built by a professional yobidashi — the specialist craftsmen who construct the rings used in official sumo tournaments — using the very same clay and sand as the Ryogoku Kokugikan, sumo's grand arena. When you step onto it, you are standing on the real thing.

Question 4

Can I try sumo myself and wear a real mawashi?

Accepted Answer

Yes. This is a hands-on experience. Changing facilities are provided, and you can put on a real mawashi (the traditional sumo belt) and step onto the ring to try sumo yourself — not just watch.

Question 5

Can children and families try sumo in Tokyo?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Families are warmly welcomed. Children aged 4 and up and their parents can take part, and our team is here to help every family join in. It is a once-in-a-lifetime memory for children and parents alike. Children under 4 enter free.

Question 6

How much does the sumo experience cost?

Accepted Answer

Adults are 11,000 yen, children aged 4 to 12 are 7,700 yen, and children aged 0 to 3 are free. The experience lasts about 90 minutes.

Question 7

How is this different from watching sumo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan?

Accepted Answer

At the Kokugikan you watch a tournament from a distance, only during the three Tokyo tournament months. Here, you experience sumo up close in an intimate local setting, all year round — and you can actually step onto the ring and try it yourself.

Question 8

Can I bring my own food and drinks?

Accepted Answer

Yes, BYO food and drink are welcome. The venue sits right on the beloved Sunamachi Ginza shopping street (shotengai), where you can pick up delicious local street food to bring along and enjoy the real local flavor before or after your experience.

Question 9

Where is it located and how do I get there?

Accepted Answer

We are at TY'S Sunamachi Building, 3-38-16 Kitasuna, Koto-ku, Tokyo, in the historic Sunamachi Ginza area. The nearest stations are Nishi-Ojima (Toei Shinjuku Line) and Minami-Sunamachi (Tokyo Metro Tozai Line).

Question 10

Is English support available?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The experience is English-friendly and designed for international visitors, with guidance provided in English.

Question 11

Do I need to book in advance?

Accepted Answer

Advance booking is recommended, as space is limited. You can reserve online through GetYourGuide, Viator, Klook or Expedia.

Question 12
